Founded in 1143 under D. Afonso Henriques, Portugal is one of Europe's oldest nation-states, its borders almost unchanged since 1297. A nation of seafarers, it opened up the world's sea routes from the 15th century.
Adopted in 1911 after the Republic was proclaimed (1910), it pairs green (hope) with red (the blood of those who fought). The armillary sphere recalls the Discoveries and the white shield with its five quinas the kingdom's medieval history.
