In Coimbra, Prince Pedro loved Inês de Castro with a forbidden love. Executed for reasons of state in 1355 at the Quinta das Lágrimas, she became queen after her death: crowned, legend says, by a king mad with grief. At the Fonte das Lágrimas, the red algae are said to be her blood still, and people speak of the « roses of Dona Inês » that bloom where her tears fell. Portugal's greatest love story — Camões sang it in The Lusiads.
